As far as pioneers go, few could deserve such a title more than Pascale Marthine Tayou, who describes himself as an “Explorer”.
Explorer of the refusal of gender-oriented identification, a geographical and cultural explorer, a collector of colours and icons, his practice is both inspired by and inspirational for the objects and places it incorporates; the ideas, just as the materials, are taken away from their daily context and given a new meaning that is faithful to their origins while opening vast corridors for new interpretations.
This appropriation of items, often disregarded or well past their “productive life”, goes well beyond the fascination seen in the cabinets of curiosity; it answers a call for a new life in a new world that is being created, and to be soon explored.
