The long-awaited interview that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have given exclusively to Oprah Winfrey, the most important African-American television figure, is scheduled for March 7. A short 30-second preview was released yesterday by the tv Cbs. The topics touched on are explosive, from Lady Diana to racism, and this anticipation seems only the breeze that anticipates the arrival of a great storm. At least this is the impression that one derives from the statement by the American presenter who said that “Just to make it clear to everybody, there is no subject that is off-limits”. Winfrey is a personal friend of Meghan and attended the couple’s wedding in 2018.
Harry said he feared “history repeating itself” in an apparent reference to the death of his mother Diana, who was killed in a Paris car crash after her vehicle was pursued by the paparazzi. “My biggest concern was history repeating itself. For me, I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here, talking to you with my wife by my side”, said the Duke of Sussex. His seems a clear reference to the media’s fury towards the Princess of Wales, as fierce as it was towards her, to the point of pushing him “to take refuge” in California. “I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago, because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us – but at least we had each other”.
In the full programme Meghan will talk about marriage, motherhood, life as a royal and how she is handling “intense public pressure”. In the minute of footage, Meghan doesn’t say a word, but in the full intervsita she made some declarations about her experience with the royal family, which Oprah defined as something “almost unsurvivable”. For the interview, Meghan wears a black Giorgio Armani dress with a lotus flower on her right shoulder – a bloom highly regarded in many cultures which symbolises rebirth, enlightenment and purity.
The US interview airs on 7 March. It is unclear when the programme, “Oprah With Meghan And Harry”, will be shown in the UK. How critical have Harry and Meghan been? We will find out when the full interview is broadcast next weekend.
